Overview
Patrick Moon focuses his practice on guiding clients through the patent application process, and assisting them in obtaining positive results from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Patrick brings a wealth of experience and insight to his work: prior to law school, he was a patent examiner for the USPTO for more than seven years. In addition, his undergraduate degree is in electrical engineering, and prior to the inception of his legal studies, he worked as a software engineer for a technology startup.
As a result of this unique professional background, Patrick has an extraordinary ability to both quickly and incisively understand the underlying technology of his clients’ innovations and to communicate it to his counterparts in the USPTO. In this role, he’s worked with a wide array of technologies such as telecommunications, including 5G, mobile devices, graphical user interfaces, semiconductors, organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays, and touch panels.
The process of obtaining a patent includes negotiation and communication with the officials of the Patent Office. Patrick’s ability to work with these individuals is exceptional, thanks to his tenure there, and this proves to be a significant asset to his clients. First and foremost, he knows the procedural requirements of the USPTO inside and out. In addition, his experience allows him to understand how examiners approach and interpret the claims of a patent application. Accordingly, he can optimize the arguments he makes, as well as working with, rather than against, the procedural nuances of the process.
Obtaining a patent is a critical step in commercializing innovation, and thanks to his experience, strategic capabilities, and judgment, Patrick is a valuable guide to clients engaged in the patent process.
